Liquid Crystal Devices use the light modulating properties of the crystals to block or allow light depending on the orientation of the crystals. The crystals have a natural orientation that is held unless an electrical current is applied, causing the crystals to twist their shape. This property, along with two different Polarizer layers, allow the pixels to turn on and off. Grayscale and wider color ranges can be achieved by applying various voltages to the pixels to achieve a range of passing light.
